Frankly speaking, vet has become popular course to study nowadays. Apart from medicine, biomedical, dietetic and others, there is a significant amount of biology based background student choose to pursue their studies in vet course.
Well, most of student choose vet course because they love animals (This is a MUST !), they like to study biology too (can memorize very well ) and perhaps... vet is well paid profession?
I know everyone is curious about vet salary. For freshbie, if someone know you are going to study vet, they will say something like that "Congratulation! You are going to become rich in future!" "Vet earns a lot money !"
Let us reveal about truth!
After you complete your 5 years study and successfully graduate as certified vet, you will move into working field. There is few options for you to choose which field you want to enter.
Veterinary Surgeon
Most of vet graduate will enter small animal clinic and become surgeon. The job scope of surgeon include treat pets like dog and cat, do surgery like OHE and castration, deal with clients. If you want to become surgeon, you must have knowledge and passion in Medicine and Surgery. And you must have capability to deal with some demanding clients. Surgeon may sound easy but it is not an easy job. Most of small animal vet work 6 days per week.
Fresh grad salary range above RM3000. Mostly between RM3000-RM4000 depend on location. Your salary will increase based on your work experience. can exceed 5k after 5 years.
Pharmaceutical company
You can choose to join pharmaceutical company and become vet technician. Mostly deal with livestock such as poultry, swine. Job scope include regular farm visit, treat livestock, management, promote products to clients, involve in sales and marketing. Farm vet require specific skill too. They work 5 days per week and their salary range from RM3K to RM4K above. It is slightly higher than small animal clinic vet.
Pharmaceutical company in Malaysia eg- Royal Canin, Purina, Rhone Ma, Sunzen, Boehringer Ingelheim and etc.
Wildlife vet
In my opinion, wildlife vet is most challenging but interesting profession. Wildlife vet must have expertise knowledge in almost all field because they deal with animals such as birds, amphibians, reptiles, and mammals. Their salary is good too.
Apart from that, vet graduate can work with Department of veterinary services, exotic vet, aquatic vet or further studies in certain area of fields and become lecturer.
Overall, to be honest vet is not high paid professions and the salary is "ok ok only " compare with other jobs. Passion is the main reason for becoming vet. We choose to become vet due to our passion towards animals and to save animals.
