Difference between Spur cell ( Acanthocytes) and Burr cell (Echinocytes)

Acanthocytes

always pathological
multiple and randomly space irregular projection -spiny erythrocytes
Poikilocyte with 3-10 surface projection
in liver disease, hemangiosarcoma, lipid metabolism in dogs
chg in rbc membrane associate with high cholesterol content of membrane expand outer lipid layer

Echinocytes -Burr cell
-not always pathological
-evenly displace spicules -9-30 spikes
-crenation,drying artefact of erythroid cell ,appear projection
-Uremia, glomerulonephritis, lymphoma, IMHA


Basophilic strippling
-basophilic granules in cytoplasm of rbc, -spontaneous aggregation of ribosome and polyribosome in RBC
-Blue dot on Romanowsky stained RBC
-Lead toxicity in abscense anemia, in dog
-regenerative anemia



CODOCYTES=
-cell with increase SA per unit, central rounded area surround by clear zone without pigment
-increase amt of cholesterol-increase surface area of rbc membrane,
-Disease- iron deficiency, cholestatic liver disease, post-splenectomy
-Obstructive jaundice, Asplenism, Regenerative anemia,


Cholestatic-obstructive jaundice, liver cell unable transport bilirubin through hepatic bile membrane,damage biliary duct

Schistocytes
-RBC fragment due PHYSICAL DAMAGE
-DIC, GN, hemangiosarcoma


Dacrocytes- tear drop shaped rbc
-Iron def state,
-Myelofibrosis (scarring of bone marrow)
-Myelophthisis- displacement of hemopoietic bone-marrow tissue by fibrosis, tumors, or granulomas


GHOST CELL-
PALE RBC WITH NO/MIN HB
IMHA, intravascular hemolysis, in vitro hemolysis, RBC lysis


Spherocytes
-lost biconcave, central pallor, bc round like sphere
-IMHA, anaplasmosis, Mycoplasma haemofelis, penicillin horse
